Modern cookery for private families was first published in 1845. It was innovative in a number of regards being much more precise in its instructions than previous cookbooks had been. Acton listed the ingredients required for a recipe exactly, for example, and gave the time taken for preparation and cooking as well as listing some of the the possible problems which a novice cook might encounter. The observations appended to the end of the recipes are evidence of her meticulous research; all of her recipes were tried and tested in her own kitchen and she was not afraid to use examples of her failures to instruct others.
